Amoebas Breed Out West
Your West Coast SAK correspondent was thrown into a tizzy by a startlingly unexpected rendition of “Cannonball” at the Breeders’ Amoeba Records in-store last Thursday in San Francisco. Perhaps the only thing more titillating than the Deal sisters decision to regale a stiff-as-ever crowd of San Franciscans with their breakout 1993 single, was the song itself: fifteen years and countless visits to rehab later, it still packed a potency that transcended simple nostalgia. While it wasn’t album-perfect–the scratchy phone receiver distortion on the chorus vocals were sorely missed–as one could see by the bobbing heads in the front row, the audience was rather enthralled.
