The Non-Coachella Fest The Other Blogs Are Afraid To Blog About

Your SAK correspondent seems to (hopefully temporarily) mistakenly degraded the quality of the photos he took at the WBAR-B-Q on Friday, but since BrooklynVegan seems to have been blinded by the glory that is Coachella to the exclusion of all else, the decision has been made to put up a report on the free indie rockstravaganzas happened above 100th street in Manhattan on a day that turned surprisingly cold after the sun set.

The highlight among the eight or so acts caught was likely Awesome Color, who’s record your SAK correspondent has had for a while but not-at-all absorbed. Regardless, the string-bending, amp-scrapping-and-tossing antics of the three-piece’s singer/guitarist, decked out in Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers tee, were as engaging to watch as to listen to, and the drummer managed to tear through the psych-rock set with appreciably furious energy.

Megafaun, who played a bit earlier than Awesome Color, kept things will rounded as the trio offered some bluegrass-tinged crowd encouragement from Durham, NC. Your SAK correspondent applauded their leaderless approach, as the three members took turnings singing lead and took audience participation to new heights, as they lead a portion of the audience across the lawn to serenade the day’s lazier counterparts as they rested in the grass.

Crystal Stilts had an oddly smarmy appeal, as the lead singer stood nearly unmoving, singing flatly and projecting something Dylan-like in both attitude and appearance.

No one else in the group was particularly engaging, and yet that somehow drew the small crowd in a little closer and caused the band to rock a bit harder as the quartet offered up somewhat slow-feeling surf-tinged backdrops for their sunglass-wearing, curly-haired to leader to drone on top of.
